False reports by Joynews led to clashes in Ejura.
It is emerging that the deliberate misreporting of JOYNEWS heightened tensions in Ejura and may have been responsible for agitating the youth to clashes with security personnel which lead to loss of life.
This became obvious on day-1 of the Ejura public hearings when Erasmus Asare Donkor, a journalist with the Multimedia Group who covered the disturbance at great length gave testimony.
Having admitted that the youth of Ejura got aggressive after hearing reports that the murdered Kaaka was a #FixTheCountry protestor who had been murdered for his campaign, the JOYNEWS reporter was asked how he as a reporter came by that account and published it.
Mr. Asare Donkor said: “Initially what we learnt was that Kaaka, the person who is dead is a protestor and a member of the fix the country campaign. We have not been able to independently verify that, but what we know is that he was campaigning and he was a social media advocate. In fact the family showed us some of his videos”
When we pushed further to one of the members of the Committee on why he did not take appropriate steps to do further checks on whether or not Kaaka was a member of the social activism group, Mr. Asare Donkor admitted his news outlet did not. Confronted with the question about how unethical the reportage had been and how it had contributed to the agitation of the youth Mr. Donkor then denied culpability and blamed editors in the studio for the misdescription.
According to some of the youth of Ejura, reports that Kaaka was a Fixthecounty protestor who had been killed for his views severely agitated them and caused tension. This is what led to their attempted attacks on the Police and other public offices, leading to the clashes.
It is unclear why the media house misdescribed the situation for days , whipping up tensions in the town. Many media watchers have however observed the media houses posture of always attacking the Akufo-Addo government or whipping up sentiments against it.
Meanwhile, Kaaka, 45 year old resident of Ejura in the Ashanti Region according to police report was attacked by one Baba Iddi, his brother on 26th June, 2021.
His death is not in connection to the recent #fixthecountry social media activism. According to the Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations Officer and Assistant Superintendent of Police, Mr Godwin Ahianyo, the suspects laid ambush in front of the house of the deceased and attacked him when he returned home from town
He died on Monday afternoon, June 28, 2021 at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi where he was receiving treatment.
