The President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo has urged the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to ban third term bids by incumbent.
He explained that, in order to prevents cases of coup d’etat, the Economic Community of West African States should outlaw third term bids by incumbent.
The Chairman of ECOWAS, His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo Addo made this statement during an interview with Kumasi based Ash FM on his second day of his Ashanti Regional tour.
In his response to a question concerning the recent coup detat in Guinea, the flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party said, “there will be reasons for military interventions but ECOWAS has agreed not to endorse it. We do not support military interventions because we believe that is not why tax payers paid tax for them to do”.
He continued that, ” the citizens paid tax for the military to hold guns and protect the nation and not to rule over them and i think the subject on the third term with Alpha Conde has been a very unfortunate decision”
The president explained further that, he thinks Alpha Conde acknowledged that decision because of a process to allow him run a third term following the referendum of 2000.
He expressed his disappointment towards his failure to convince the military to release Conde from detention, although he was celebrated by the citizens of Guinea while the Ivorian President, Alassane Ouattara was being hooted at, because he also opted to run for a third third in La Cote D’Ivore after his successor died.
